When You Need Rendering
There are plenty of reasons why adding, repairing or replacing render on your home might be needed.
Re-rendering can help refresh old and tired exterior walls, helping improve the look of your home and adding value. Rendering can be an excellent choice if you’re thinking of selling or simply want to spruce up your exterior walls, providing a new finish or the perfect base for adding colour. Rendering can also be added to extensions, garages or garden walls to improve the look of your property and keep it consistent. Sometimes homeowners also want a completely new look, such as by removing pebble dash or textured render and replacing it with a smooth finish.
Our homes also take a lot of punishment from the weather, dealing with lots of wind and rain over a year, as well as cold winters and increasingly hot summers. That means that render can get damaged over time, with cracks, dents, peeling render and damp all needing repairs to keep your home weatherproof.
How the Rendering Process Works
Client satisfaction is important to us, and we’ve got over 20 years of experience working with homeowners and landlords across South London. We understand that you want to minimise disruption and mess for you and your neighbours. Fortunately, the rendering process is fairly straightforward:
We’ll come to your home and provide a free written quote with no obligation. We’ll also give you a date window* and arrange for scaffolding, if it’s needed.
We start preparing the wall(s) by cleaning them or removing old render, repairing the substrate, and adding reinforcement mesh or a bonding agent if it’s needed.
We add about 10-15mm of the first (base) coat, making sure it’s fully worked into all the gaps and spaces in the brickwork. We scratch or roughen the surface to help the second coat stick, and let it dry for between 24-48 hours.
Once it’s dry, we apply the second (final) coat and your chosen finish (smooth, textured etc.). Cement renders need to be kept damp while they cure. This involves lightly misting the wall daily with water for 2-3 days, otherwise they can dry too fast and crack. We’ll come and do this for you / We’ll show you how to do this.
Once the wall has cured, we’ll come back to add the final weatherproof top coat and/or finish the painting.
Once you’re happy with our work, we’ll clear everything away and leave your property looking spotless.
*Rendering and external wall insulating needs certain weather conditions with low wind, minimal rain and no direct sunlight. Ideally, we need temperatures between about 10-25 celsius. This means we can’t always start on the agreed date. However, we’ll always keep you informed of what’s going on.
Durability and Caring for Render
Well-applied cement render can last for 15-20, depending on the weather conditions and how well it’s cared for. This includes regularly cleaning the walls with a low pressure hose or soapy water, to remove dirt, grime and algae. Repainting the walls every few years with weatherproof exterior paint will also help keep them sealed.
Maintenance also allows you to inspect the walls for signs of problems, such as hairline cracks, peeling render or signs of damp. It’s a good idea to gently knock on the wall in different places to listen for hollow-sounding spots, which may mean the render is coming away from the brick underneath.
