Our Plastering Services

Our team of professional plasterers in South London provide a wide range of services for residential and commercial properties, including:

  • Full Room Replastering: We can replaster entire rooms, either repairing what’s there or building from scratch, to create a pristine new surface that’s ready for decorating.
  • Skimming: If it’s in good condition, skimming refreshes existing plaster by covering light imperfections, uneven patches and hairline cracks before applying paint or wallpaper.
  • Plasterboarding (Dry Lining): Dry lining is a faster, more affordable alternative to wet plaster that’s ideal for lofts, extensions or renovations. We use thermal-insulated plasterboard sheets that are glued, battened or screwed to the wall before being skimmed to create a smooth final finish.
  • Ceiling Plastering: We repair or replace plasterboard ceilings of all sizes to guarantee a flat, smooth surface that’s paint-ready and designed to last. We can also replaster traditional ceilings for older buildings.
  • Artex Removal & Reskimming: We remove old textured artex and re-skim your ceilings to give a flat, modern appearance.

Please note that Artex ceilings installed before 2000 may contain asbestos, and we highly recommend that they are tested. In this case, we may recommend overboarding.
  • Plaster repairs: We repair and replaster damaged walls and ceilings. Whether it’s small touch-ups, cracked plaster, fixing damage from plumbing or electrical work, or restoration from water or damp, we can bring it back to life.
  • New builds & extensions: We provide a full new build and extension plastering service for developers, builders, contractors and homeowners, from first coat to finishing.

What to Expect From a Typical LWM Plastering Job

With over 20 years of experience working with homeowners and landlords across South London, we understand that the potential price, mess and disruption of replastering can be daunting. But we find most jobs run very smoothly, and we always leave your property looking spotless.

  1. We’ll visit your site to assess the job and give you a free written quote with no obligation. If you proceed, we’ll arrive on the agreed date and start preparing.
  2. We start by removing furniture, covering any fittings and taking down shelves, sockets and switches, as well as any other items attached to the walls. Floors and other surfaces are protected from damage by taping down protective film or sheets.
  3. We then strip paint or wallpaper and remove or repair any old, cracked plaster from the walls. If it’s just a reskim, we’ll fill any cracks, seams or gaps before thoroughly cleaning the surface.
  4. Depending on whether we’re reskimming or fully replastering, we either apply a bonding agent or a hard wall plaster base coat and let it partially dry for 2-3 hours before evening it out. This helps the skim coat stick to the surface and ensures it dries at the correct rate.
  5. The skim (or final) coat is applied, smoothed and allowed to dry. Reskimming should take between 3-7 days to dry, while full plastering can take between 7-14 days, depending on the room’s conditions.
  6. Once it’s dry, we’ll come back and make sure everything is to your satisfaction. The wall is ready for finishing, so we either do the final handover or get started on the painting and decorating.

Materials & Finishes

We use a wide range of materials to achieve the best possible results, depending on the project.

For use on high-suction, porous surfaces such as bare masonry, concrete blocks, or bricks, hardwall bonding is used as an undercoat. Not only is it strong and crack-resistant, it also provides a rough surface for the skim coat to stick to. For smooth, non-porous surfaces like concrete, painted walls or existing plaster, a PVA bonding agent works best.

We use multi-finish plaster for the skim coat because it creates a smooth, durable and paint-ready finish that looks fantastic.

FAQs

How long does it take to plaster a room?

Most ‘normal’ replastering jobs take between 2-3 days, not including drying time. However, it varies depending on room size and the amount of prep work required.

For example, we could prep and replaster a small room in as little as a day, but an average living room or bedroom (roughly between 15-17m²) would take between 1-2. Large rooms or those needing lots of repairs can take longer.

New plaster will take between 7-14 days to dry under normal conditions. However, cold or humid conditions can extend this. Reskimming is often quicker, usually between 3-7 days before you can start painting.

Ideally yes. We need clear access to the walls and ceilings, so it’s best to remove all furniture from a room. If this isn’t possible, we can cover it and work around it, but it can risk damage.

As long as it’s in good condition and isn’t peeling off the wall behind it, we can often clean, repair and reskim over old plaster.

Skimming is mostly cosmetic and involves adding a new, thin layer over the existing plaster to smooth any uneven patches, cover hairline cracks and refresh the surface ready for decorating. This saves both time and money.

Replastering is a structural process that involves taking the wall back to the brickwork and completely rebuilding the layers of plaster.

Small hairline cracks are expected in new plaster, often due to the drying and shrinking process. In extensions or new builds, you may also see small cracks in the plaster around doors and windows as the building settles. In most cases, these can be filled and painted once they’re completely dry.
